The Paradigm Shift in Mathematics

Sep 28, 2014

“Helping teachers, students dig deeper….”
That is the headline in the Sheridan County, Wyoming Press. In their September 16th issue, you can find an article featuring me and one of my consultant colleagues, Lisa Handyside. We were in Wyoming recently to work with the staff and students at Big Horn High School.

Many schools are struggling with the idea of how to teach with the new Common Core Standards and are looking for different ways to help students learn. The staff members in Sheridan County,Wyoming are no different. They are seeking out ways to start the paradigm shift—change how teachers are teaching and students are learning. One focus area was learning how to implement the Eight Math Practices which ask kids to really understand WHY they are doing math a certain way. The Eight Math Practices are:

  1. Persevere through problem solving
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
  4. Model with mathematics
  5. Use appropriate tools
  6. Be precise
  7. Look for and make use of the structure
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
