Math Workshops

Foundations of Number Sense: Addition and Subtraction

Feeling overwhelmed with all of the different ways to solve addition and subtraction problems in the 21st century? Why can’t we just do it the way we learned, with one answer and only one way to find it? Join Shannon to transform the way you think about solving addition and subtraction problems and helps you enable your students to explain their thinking in multiple ways. Participants will create a toolkit of strategies to help implement various means of solving addition and subtraction problems (3 ways plus the traditional, with concrete-pictorial-abstract means) in your classroom tomorrow.

Foundations of Number Sense: Multiplication/Division

Feeling overwhelmed with all of the different ways to solve multiplication and division problems in the 21st century? Why can’t we just do it the way we learned, with one answer and only one way to find it? Join Shannon to transform the way you think about solving multiplication and division problems and helps you enable your students to explain their thinking in multiple ways. Participants will create a toolkit of strategies to help implement various means of solving multiplication and division problems (3 ways plus the traditional, with concrete-pictorial-abstract means) in your classroom tomorrow!

Fractions

Help students build strong conceptual understanding as you learn to implement fraction instruction based on a variety of visual models, concrete manipulatives, and hands-on activities. During this workshop, teachers will understand the progression of fraction instruction and learn how to build a foundational understanding of fractions before advancing to algorithms and abstract equations. Participants will leave with strategies for alternative methods of computing fractions and full collection of activities and games designed for purposeful practice.

Math Workshop

Tired of the “one size fits all” approach to math instruction? Discover the alternative! Transform your classroom with Math Workshop, the balanced, student-centered approach to learning characterized by daily routines and centers. Math workshop provides an effective environment for developing lifelong mathematical reasoning skills. Participants will learn the key elements of an effective math lesson, the importance of daily use of manipulatives, and how to integrate game-based learning into current instructional practices. The result is instructional time that is focused, engaging, and full of opportunities for practical application of skills being taught. Participants will also leave with a variety of math games that can be easily differentiated and support the Common Core State Standards.

Numeracy Development with Number Talks

Once your students have memorized the 10 frame and can subitize like rockstars in one modality, what happens when you show 10 in a scatter or on the top row of a Rekenrek? If they go back to one-to-one counting, this workshop is for you! Join Shannon as she helps you change the way you think about numeracy development with young children. This foundational workshop will equip you to support your students as they learn to understand and explain their own thought processes, implement numeracy chats in the classroom, and discovery fun numeracy games and activities that can be implemented tomorrow!

Model Drawings

Gain confidence while teaching word problems when you discover the power of model drawing! Armed with a step-by-step method of translating a word problem into a diagram or model, teachers will be able to help students recognize relationships between quantities and build deeper understanding so they can easily solve the problem. Participants will learn how to build competence in small steps by scaffolding these strategies for struggling students as they use these problem-solving techniques to build the foundation for algebraic thinking, even in early grades!

Other Topics

Math Intervention

How effective is your school in peeling back the layers in math to provide tier 1 and tier 2 support? Join Shannon as she takes you on a journey on how to delayer math skills to discover the root of the problem. Learn to use the instructional consultation problem solving process by finding students’ instructional match, creating smart goals and an assessment to progress monitor student’s skills in math. In addition, discover how to create 3 week intervention kits to be used during intervention blocks and with the math interventionists.

Special Education Training Series (K-5 SE Teachers and Self Contained)

Special Education teachers have a unique job, often working with students with widely varied levels of disabilities from up to six different grade levels. It can be difficult to find training that applies in their classrooms, though special education teachers often need training the most! SIS4Teachers has a solution tailored specifically for this special group of educators! Join Shannon as she peels back the layers in math to help you implement all of the M³ workshops so your special needs students aren’t missing out on any content. Teachers will receive a playbook of instructional strategies that will meet the unique needs of their learners, and with this option, will receive customized one-on-one coaching to see how these strategies can be implemented with their own students to meet specific IEP goals.

Curriculum Framework - Understanding by Design

Are you struggling with using district-purchased math resource and integrating our Molding Math Mindsets instructional strategies? This will take your district on a deep dive to develop a curriculum framework customized for the students in your district. Together we will create quarterly/trimester promises with power standards, supporting standards, and additional clusters. We will use the Understanding by Design framework to backwards design a curriculum through the creation of interim and summative assessments that are standard based and with the appropriate Depth Of Knowledge (DOK). Each unit of study will be comprehensive to integrate the district purchased resource as well as research based math instructional strategies using Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA). Each unit will be a complete guide for teachers to meld together number talks, vocabulary, visual model word problems, math salad bar contents, application games, performance tasks, and student self reflection per unit with our famous Mini Binder and supporting materials.

Visualization & Visual Memory Grades K-2

Participants will learn how language, imaginative play, and visual motor play contribute to the normal development of visualization and visual memory. Teachers will be given fun practical activities that will help students with delays in developmental visualization and visual memory.
