What Happens When We Push Students to the Next Level of Math Before They Are Ready?

Jun 26, 2015

….that’s the name of the article that I just launched. I am so excited to share it with you on MLive! Here’s a peek at what it’s about!

Americans hear it all the time: U.S. students are behind in math in comparison to other countries. The scary thing is that it’s not just by a little bit, but by a land slide. As the students in the global economy increasingly thrive, the lag among American students continues to raise concerns.

What’s going on?
A big reason may be in the way we are teaching mathematics to our students. As Americans, we’ve been taught specific procedures on how to solve math problems so that we can get them right, but once we’re asked how to do those same problems in real life scenario or application based problem, we can’t. This is where our student’s proficiency starts to drop off.

As an educational consulting firm, Strategic Intervention Solutions systematically trains entire school systems on how to teach children to have foundations of number sense in mathematics. Their mission is to provide teachers with hands on professional development skills so that they learn concepts one day and use them the next.

Strategic Interventions Solutions is unique in that they are known for their program follow-up with school systems. They don’t try and do all of the professional training development in one day. Samulski’s consulting firm focuses on trying to build teachers’ pedagogical knowledge to help them instruct students on how to understand numeracy. Once the training is completed, the firm gives the teachers some time to digest all of the information and put it into practice within their classrooms. Then, at a later date, Samulski and her team will enter the schools and do job-embedded coaching with the educators to help them embed the concepts into their classroom.
