The Key to Unlocking Your Child’s Heart

Jan 8, 2016

How many of you have asked your child what they did at school and they reply…”Nothing!” Every parent knows that the common “how was your day” question doesn’t elicit the responses that we want, but we keep trying it. Often times children are great at asking so many questions; but the better we can get as parents at asking children questions, the better our children’s response will be! So now when our kids get home from school, we don’t  say: “How was your day?” Because they don’t know. Their day was lots of things.

You Are The Key to Unlocking Your Child’s Heart…48 Questions to Ask your Kids

Instead we should ask:

  • How did you feel during your spelling test?
  • What did you say to the new girl when you all went out to recess?
  • Did you feel lonely at all today?
  • Were there any times you felt proud of yourself today?

SO…what if you had a “Conversation Jar” filled with interesting questions that you could ask to get to know your children better? No longer would you have to rely on the old, “how was your day” question that you know will end the conversation before it even began. You could put this jar on the kitchen table and a few times a week, take turns pulling out a question during dinner.
A colleague of mine posted this idea from Glennon Doyle Melton’s “Momastery” blog about “The Key Jar”! http://momastery.com/blog/2015/04/24/key-jar/

You will notice that the questions are very thoughtful on many different levels:

  • Self-What was your first thought when you woke up today?
  • Peers-Who in your class seems lonely?
  • The world around them-What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our world today?

Just print the questions, cut them apart, and place the questions in a jar!  I absolutely love the idea and wanted to share it with you!

Do you hold the key to your child’s heart?
