Math facts practice should involve more than just speed and memorization. This low-prep, kid-approved game does help students practice their math facts, but it will also help them develop an understanding of how multiplication works too!
The game is…Multiplication Tetris!
To play, each student will need:
- Two dice
- A colored pencil
- A Multiplication Tetris game board (or graph paper, if you don’t have time to print)
The student rolls the dice, forms an array based on the product of the two numbers they rolled, and strategically places the array on the bottom of the grid (just like you would in Tetris). Play until no more arrays will fit in the spaces, and the first person to fill up their game board wins! Scores are determined by the fewest unused unit spaces. The lower the score, the better!
This game is easily adjusted for differentiation purposes or different classroom situations (small group, whole group, etc.). Students can play alone or in teams. We love to get the whole class involved and see who has the lowest score. You can adjust the dice you use to increase or decrease the difficulty level of the math facts.
