Grades 1-5. Build Mathematical Vocabulary. Memorable Math Mights characters represent each strategy so students can learn to associate the characters with the strategies and they can begin to use mathematical vocabulary appropriately.

This product includes:

  • Math Mights 8-in-1 Flip Chart.This durable, flip-chart style poster demonstrates three alternative addition strategies, plus the traditional strategy, to help students develop their confidence and establish a foundation for problem solving.
    • Eight posters in one! Each tab of the poster features a different character describing how to solve the problems his or her way. One side will feature beginning strategies with appropriate examples using easily accessible numbers. As students start to grasp the beginning strategies, flip the poster around to reveal more advanced strategies involving more advanced examples (such as fractions or decimals).
  • Digital Download Companion. For each character/strategy, this resource includes a student-friendly bio sheet on the character and their strategy, sample problems in both the beginning and advanced categories, and "create your own" practice sheets to use as exit tickets or independent stations. This resource helps sequentially build a student's understanding of addition strategies as each new character joins and works together with the previous characters.
  • Video Tutorial Links! See the Math Mights and their strategies applied to real problems! Watch as Shannon demonstrates, step-by-step, the process of using the Math Mights to solve an addition problem, including the use of concrete manipulatives when applicable.
