Why SIS Coaching Works
SIS coaching is sustained, embedded professional learning that helps schools transform math instruction from the inside out:
Using Real-Time Support
Coaching happens in classrooms, not just in workshops, so support is immediately actionable.
Fostering Reflective Practice
Teachers analyze student work, reflect on teaching moves, and celebrate small wins.
Building Instructional Models
We provide practical strategies like number talks, inquiry-based launches, and visual models.
Centering on Students
The focus is always on what students say, do, and understand—not just on what’s taught.
Creating a Culture of Learning
Schools become spaces where teachers grow together through trust, experimentation, and feedback.
Developing Deep Content Knowledge
Teachers gain conceptual understanding of math—not just procedures.
Build the pedagogy your teachers need to teach math confidently and effectively.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is SIS coaching in middle school different from elementary coaching?
Elementary coaching often follows a natural progression—starting with numeracy and building through operations.
Middle school coaching focuses on the 8 Standards of Mathematical Practice, emphasizing student discourse, perseverance, and conceptual reasoning. It’s highly customizable based on teacher comfort.
What does a typical coaching session look like?
Coaching sessions are collaborative and classroom-based. We may model lessons, co-teach, observe, or facilitate reflection—depending on your goals and context.
What is 1:1 coaching? What is cluster coaching?
1:1 Coaching: Personalized support with an individual teacher.
Cluster Coaching: A group of teachers (often by grade level) working together with a coach.
Do I need a sub when I work with a coach?
Yes, for cluster coaching, schools typically provide one substitute so that teachers can rotate out of classrooms for focused reflection time with the coach. For 1:1 coaching, subs are often needed as well so teachers can step out to debrief after the lesson.
What is reverse coaching?
In reverse coaching, the teacher leads new learning while the coach observes and provides targeted feedback. It’s a powerful way to grow instructional confidence.
Can teachers participate in instructional rounds?
Yes! Once coaching is established, Instructional Rounds (or “learning walks”) allow teachers to observe classrooms with a shared focus, reflect on patterns, and strengthen instruction across the school.
What can I expect from my coach? What will my coach expect from me?
You can expect support, respect, and trust from your coach. SIS coaches are experienced former teachers who understand your curriculum and realities.
We ask for openness to learning, a willingness to try new strategies, and honest reflection as we grow together.
