What A Successful Student-Led Math Night Looks Like

Dec 3, 2015

In one of our past blogs, we featured Joey, a teacher in Sheridan County, Wyoming who created an anchor task that I have been using in my training sessions across the country.  Well, recently a teacher from the same district sent me a link of videos highlighting a math parent night that they hosted in November.

This is a district that I have been working with for a few years and they have really been working hard on changing the math culture amongst the teaching staff, administrators and parents.  This video is an amazing example of how they continue to make strides in making the shift in mathematics.

In these videos you will see 5th grade students at Big Horn Elementary who wanted to share their “new” math strategies with their parents.  You will see examples of the area model, expanded form, compensation, lattice, number lines, partial sums, and partial quotients.  They had 100% attendance for all the kids that were there, along with the superintendent, teachers from across the district, and board members.  They described the vibe as “electrifying enthusiasm.”

Way to go Big Horn Elementary! What a great way to have students take ownership of their learning and help lead their parents in understanding math in a new way!

Thank you for sharing this with us!
