Number Talks

Apr 18, 2013

Happy Thursday Blogger Friends! Here is a shout out to my friends at Doherty Elementary in West Bloomfield, Michigan. It has been a pleasure working with all of you this year and I look forward to our continued work together in math next school year.

We had great discussion today about changing the way we teach math which is often through “telling” instead of by “showing” (or having students show). We talked about how many of us teach the procedures in math without knowing if students really understanding how to apply what they have learned. The reality is, this is the way we learned, right?

As we know their is a HUGE paradigm shift in how math is being taught in the 21st century and we have to realize it is going to take some time to get there. We know implementing the 8 Math Practice Standards and having children learn how to “talk” about math is really important for numeracy development and math application.

A fan favorite of mine is:  “Number Talks” by Sherry Parrish. This is great resource to get you started!

Another way is to try math journaling and encourage math conversation among students. Below I found some great Math Talk Stems and a Math Bookmark online that I thought were worth sharing. Please feel free to comment on ways you have started to teach math through “showing”!
